Is It Illegal to Hang Stuff On Your Rearview Mirror in South Dakota?
You would think by the number of things you see hanging from rearview mirrors that the answer to that question is - no. But you would be wrong.
Whether it's fuzzy dice, air fresheners, beads, or yes, even disabled placards, it is illegal to have them hanging from your rearview mirror while you are driving.
But plenty of people either don't know it, don't care, or don't think that they will get pulled over for this minor offense. But occasionally, it does happen.
According to South Dakota Codified Law 13-25-6, Objects dangling between the driver and the windshield are to be considered a petty offense.
I'll be honest here when I say that I was one of those people who didn't know this law existed for the longest time. I guess I thought if manufacturers made things meant to dangle from a rearview mirror that it must be okay to hang them there.
I know I'm not the only one who may have had a dangling air freshener at one time. Now you just clip them to your air vents.
But this still doesn't account for all the graduation tassels, dream catchers, sun catchers, crystals, photographs, cartoon characters, and other hanging items you see on rearview mirrors in the Sioux Empire.
