Communities including Viborg, Hurley, Canton, Milford, Wakefield, Inwood, Rock Rapids, Sioux Falls, Harrisburg, Tea, Irene, Marion, Ponca, Chancellor, Larchwood, George, Yankton, Allen, Lennox, Spirit Lake, Vermillion, Parker, Sibley, Arnolds Park, and Centerville should prepare for dangerous heat and humidity throughout the day.

Afternoon temperatures combined with high humidity will produce heat index values up to 104 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Anyone spending time outdoors should take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded locations, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without access to air conditioning.

Young children and pets are especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

Never leave children or animals unattended in a parked vehicle, as interior temperatures can rise to life-threatening levels within minutes.

If you must work or exercise outdoors, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, take frequent breaks, and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms such as dizziness, heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, or confusion should be taken seriously. Seek medical attention immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke, including loss of consciousness or a high body temperature.

The dangerous heat is expected to continue through this evening before conditions gradually improve. Stay weather aware, limit outdoor activities when possible, and continue monitoring the latest forecasts and advisories throughout the day.
