Lake Lorraine In Sioux Falls Is A Manmade Lake Worth Knowing About

Sioux Falls has several picturesque, peaceful places to enjoy during the warm weather months. One of the more popular spots is the Lake Lorraine complex, a man-made lake located on 33 acres in one of Sioux Falls newest retail centers located in the western region of the city.

Just west of Interstate 29 between 26th and 41st Streets, Lake Lorraine has become much more than a man-made lake. It's the centerpiece of one of Sioux Falls' newest lifestyle destinations, surrounded by shopping, restaurants, hotels, offices, apartments, entertainment, and a scenic one-mile paved trail that's seemingly always buzzing with activity.

On any given summer day, you'll spot walkers getting their daily steps in, runners chasing personal records, cyclists cruising by, families out for an evening stroll, dog owners letting Fido do his or her thing, and enough Canada geese mulling around that they should probably be paying property taxes there.

It's easy to see why Lake Lorraine has become one of the city's favorite places to relax, but before you pack every piece of outdoor gear you own, there are a few rules worth knowing.

Sorry, Anglers, but fishing is usually off limits. While it's true that the crystal-clear lake is stocked with fish, including largemouth bass, northern pike, and crappie, you're probably tempted to grab your fishing rod. Not so fast. Fishing at Lake Lorraine is generally prohibited. The only exception comes during special South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks catch-and-release fishing events, which typically pop up three or four times each year. Those free events give anglers a rare opportunity to cast a line without getting into hot water.

Swimming is also a hard no!

If a hot July afternoon has you thinking Lake Lorraine looks refreshing, resist the temptation.

Even though the lake is reportedly around 17 feet deep at its deepest point, swimming is not allowed. So you'll need to practice your cannonballs at the neighborhood pool.

Thinking about launching your fishing boat or making a few laps on a jet ski?

That's another no-go. Private watercraft, including boats and jet skis, aren't permitted on Lake Lorraine. The good news? You don't have to own a boat to enjoy the water.

Lake Lorraine offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors without breaking the rules.

Visitors can rent kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards through an on-site business called Flow and Paddle. Feeling adventurous? You can even try one of their popular yoga-on-the-water classes.

The area also hosts seasonal Farmers Markets, community events, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities throughout the year. Whether you're shopping, grabbing dinner on a patio, or simply enjoying the view, there's usually something happening around the lake.

And if your social media feed needs a refresh, Lake Lorraine has quietly become one of Sioux Falls' favorite selfie spots. Between the waterfront views, fountains, sunsets, and modern architecture, it's tough to take a bad picture, unless some rogue goose decides to photo-bomb your shot.
