Brookings To Open Doors On First Target Store This Sunday At 10 AM
I don't know what it is, but almost every female shopper I've ever encountered seems to go absolutely koo koo for Cocoa Puffs for Target Stores. There are few words more likely to inspire an impromptu road trip than "New Target Store Opening." Whether you're stopping in for laundry detergent or somehow leaving with a cart full of throw pillows, candles, snacks, and things you didn't know you needed, Target has a way of making shopping feel like an adventure for both female and male shoppers alike.
Starting Sunday, July 26, Sioux Empire shoppers will have one more Target to set their sights on. The long-awaited Brookings Target officially opens its doors, giving residents north of Sioux Falls and anyone looking for an excuse to hit the road a brand-new shopping destination just 50 short miles from Sioux Falls.
The new 129,000-square-foot store, located at 801 Lefevre Drive, is much more than a place to grab a gallon of milk or a birthday card. According to Dakota News Now, the store features EV charging stations, a pharmacy, a café, an expanded grocery section, a larger apparel department, and updated tech and toy departments. In other words, it's designed to make it very easy to say, "I only came in for one thing," before walking out with ten.

Brookings first learned it was getting a Target back in December 2024, and after roughly 18 months of anticipation, opening day is about to arrive. The official grand opening begins at 10:00 AM Sunday, July 26, and city leaders expect plenty of excitement.
Brookings Mayor Ope Niemeyer told Dakota News Now he wouldn't be surprised to see shoppers lining up outside before the doors even open. Considering Target's loyal fan base, that prediction seems like a pretty safe bet.
A few hundred lucky shoppers already received a sneak peek during a ribbon-cutting celebration and special shopping event on Tuesday, July 21. Early reactions were overwhelmingly positive.
The new store is also expected to have a significant impact on the community beyond shopping. It will create approximately 200 new jobs, providing another economic boost for Brookings while giving residents one more retail option without having to make a drive to Sioux Falls.
For Sioux Falls-area shoppers, the new Target offers another convenient choice just up Interstate 29. Whether you're an SDSU student furnishing an apartment, a parent needing to stock up on school supplies, the Brookings location could quickly become a popular stop.
