The familiar clatter of hooves and the gentle rumble of wooden wheels will soon be making its way back to the streets of Brookings, South Dakota, to close out the summer.

The Brookings Historic Preservation Commission is once again hosting its "Central Residential Historic District Trolley Rides" in downtown Brookings.

The horse-drawn trolley provided by McCrossen Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls will be trotting its way through downtown Brookings as part of the annual "Downtown at Sundown" event on Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Dakota News Now reports that passengers can expect to get a scenic loop tour of some of Brookings historic district neighborhoods. The trolley ride tour comes complete with narration and commentary by BHPC Commissioners offering up stories and fun facts about Brookings rich history.

The journey will take riders on a tour of the historic district that consists of 127 primary and 93 secondary structures built between 1891-1941.

According to Dakota News Now, the 10-person trolley rides will depart every 20 to 30 minutes, starting at the southwest corner of Fifth Street and Fifth Avenue. The trolley will then proceed clockwise through the Residential Historic District until the ride's completion.

Those interested in climbing on board are asked to wait at the southeast corner of Fifth Street and Fifth Avenue between departures.

The popular trolley rides have become a seasonal staple in Brookings for the past couple of years. The trolley will make another appearance around the "Festival of Lights Parade," which comes up in November.

These family-friendly rides are perfect for people of all ages and should not be missed.

It's a great opportunity to get a delightful, educational experience checking out some of Brookings’ historic structures one hoofbeat at a time.
