Safety Concerns for Young Drivers

Getting a driver's license is a huge milestone for a teenager. It means freedom, independence, and finally being able to get behind the wheel without Mom or Dad riding along.

But a new study suggests South Dakota may not be the safest place in the country for young drivers.

South Dakota's Ranking: The Facts

WalletHub's latest study on the best and worst states for teen drivers ranks South Dakota 43rd out of all 50 states, putting the Mount Rushmore State among the eight worst states in the nation for teen drivers.

And this isn't just about a number on a list. Driving is a serious risk for teenagers across the country. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 16 to 19, an age group that also has one of the highest risks of being involved in a crash.

The financial impact is significant, too. WalletHub says motor vehicle crashes involving people ages 13 to 19 result in approximately $40.7 billion every year in medical expenses and lost work.

And that's only part of the bill. Families can also face higher insurance costs, vehicle repairs, traffic citations and other expenses when young drivers get into trouble behind the wheel.

Understanding the Study: Key Factors

For its study, WalletHub looked at 23 different factors in all 50 states. Those included things such as teen driver fatalities, the cost of car repairs and the strength of laws designed to prevent impaired driving.

The result is a ranking that gives parents plenty to think about as their teenagers learn to navigate the road.

A driver's license may be a rite of passage, but for parents, helping a new driver develop safe habits could be one of the most important lessons they'll ever teach.
