Items Banned From The South Dakota State Fair

If you’re planning a trip to the South Dakota State Fair in Huron this year, there are a few things you’ll want to leave at home.

The 2026 South Dakota State Fair runs September 2-7, and fair officials have several rules designed to keep the grounds safe and enjoyable for everyone.

One of the biggest things to remember is that drones are not allowed anywhere on the fairgrounds.

Personal golf carts and other motorized vehicles, including ATVs, four-wheelers, lawn mowers, hoverboards and scooters, are also prohibited without prior approval.

Bicycles, roller blades, roller skates and skateboards are also not permitted.

Planning to bring your dog? Pets are allowed in the campground but generally are not allowed elsewhere on the fairgrounds, with exceptions for service animals and approved exhibits.

Emotional-support animals do not qualify as service animals under the fair's policy.

There are also restrictions inside the Grandstand.

These items are not allowed:

• Umbrellas
• laser pointers
• large banners
• GoPros
• Selfie sticks
• Professional photography

And don't forget: the fairgrounds are tobacco-free, while alcohol can only be consumed in designated areas. Campfires and open fires, including propane fire pits, are prohibited as well.

Fair officials also reserve the right to search bags, backpacks, coolers and other containers.

So before heading to Huron, it's a good idea to check the official rules and make sure you aren't bringing something that could keep you from getting through the gate.
