Iowa has enacted a hands-free "No Touch" law for driving, which could cost you if you get caught breaking the new law. 

Iowa's new Law means drivers can no longer hold or manually operate electronic devices while driving.

This Iowa law takes effect on July 1st, 2025. While drivers can use devices in hands-free or voice-activated modes, they cannot hold or manipulate them while driving. 

There are some exemptions, such as for public safety personnel, healthcare professionals in emergencies, and those receiving safety-related information.

What's banned:

Holding or manually operating a phone or other electronic device while driving is prohibited. 

Hands-free is okay:

Voice-activated and hands-free devices are allowed. 

Single touch is permitted: 

Drivers can use a single touch to activate or deactivate a device, like answering a call. 

The law includes exemptions for:

  • Public safety personnel performing official duties. 
  • Healthcare professionals in emergencies. 
  • People receiving safety-related information (e.g., weather alerts). 
  • Reporting emergencies. 
  • Farm equipment operation. 
  • Two-way radio users (FCC license required). 
  • Public transit employees in stopped vehicles. 
  • Utility workers. 
  • Transportation network company drivers in prearranged rides (when stopped). 
  • Fleet management system users. 
  • Enforcement:

Law enforcement can pull over drivers for violating the hands-free law. 

Fines:

While there is a six-month grace period for warnings, $100.00 fines will be implemented starting January 1, 2026. 

Impact: 

The law aims to reduce distracted driving and improve road safety.
