Travelers planning Independence Day road trips across Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota will see some higher gas prices.

GasBuddy says the national average for a gallon of gas will be ticking up just a bit to around $3.17 a gallon on July 4.

Prices may increase due to the 72 million people traveling over the holiday weekend.

AAA predicts a record-breaking 72.2 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Fourth of July holiday period this year.

This includes 61.6 million people traveling by car and 5.84 million flying.

Current State Averages:

  • Minnesota: $3.03 per gallon
  • Iowa: $2.95 per gallon
  • South Dakota: $2.98 per gallon

These prices represent substantial savings compared to previous years, with the average U.S. gas price down 7.3% from $3.44 a year ago.

In the last few weeks, the average gas prices in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota have fallen about 6 to 10 cents.

The regional advantage is clear when compared to the national average of $3.178 per gallon.

Iowa leads with the lowest prices, followed closely by South Dakota, while Minnesota remains competitive despite being slightly higher.

This pricing environment creates ideal conditions for Fourth of July road trips, whether you're exploring Minnesota's lakes, Iowa's scenic byways, or South Dakota's iconic landmarks.
