The first major Winter Weather Event of the New Year has the residents of the Sioux Empire grounded in many ways.

NO TRAVEL advisories have just been issued for Minnehaha and Lincoln counties due to the heavy snow and the freezing rain that is sweeping through the region at this time. These conditions are making travel difficult if not impossible in some areas, with reports of cars stuck in heavy snow all over the area.

Travel is not advised in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area at this time. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sioux Falls area until Wednesday (January 4).

According to Dakota News Now, flights in and out of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport are grounded until at least 3:00 PM on Tuesday (January 3).

Flight information impacting Sioux Falls and the state can be found here.

The Winter Storm Warning is also impacting Sioux Area Metro in the city. SAM has suspended all bus routes until further notice. SAM officials will continue to monitor the fast-changing weather conditions bearing down on the city right now and make route adjustments and cancellations as needed.

The city of Sioux Falls could see 1 to 3 inches of snow an hour, combined with wind gusts of 40mph at times throughout much of Tuesday morning. All of this will make it extremely difficult for snowplows to keep the emergency snow routes clear during the worst part of this winter weather event.

Once this storm moves out of the region the Sioux Falls area is expected to receive in excess of 12 inches of new snowfall.

The bottom line is, travel will be a challenge wherever you go at this time. That is why officials highly recommend that if you do not need to travel, don't. Stay home until this storm subsides and play it safe.
