Sioux Falls Road Crews To Hit Several Neighborhood Streets This Week

Another week means another round of road projects across the Sioux Empire, and several of them are getting underway today. That means lane reductions, road closures, detours, and the occasional “Wait…can I even get through here?” moment.

Starting Monday, August 3, West 26th Street will be reduced to one lane between Sertoma Avenue and Marion Road. According to Dakota News Now, crews will be working on curb and gutter, valley gutter, and storm inlet apron repairs before additional overlay work is scheduled for the middle of August. Road work signs are expected to remain in the area through late October, so this won't be one of those projects that's here today and magically gone tomorrow.

West Blackhawk Street will also close beginning Monday between North M Avenue and North K Avenue as crews tackle sanitary sewer improvements in the Industrial Park area. North K Avenue and North M Avenue will also be closed between West Blackhawk Street and West Cherokee Street. Assuming Mother Nature cooperates, the project should be completed by early October.

There's already a closure underway on 77th Street between Santa Rosa Court and Cliff Avenue. The project began Friday, July 31, and involves utility work. Businesses in the area will remain accessible, but drivers should expect the closure to remain in place until approximately Wednesday, August 12.

Another project getting underway on Monday, August 3rd will affect 20th Street west of Ninth Avenue. Traffic will not be allowed past the intersection of 20th Street and Ninth Avenue while crews work on underground utilities, concrete surfacing, sidewalks and street lighting. The project is expected to continue into early November, so if 20th Street is part of your normal Sioux Falls commute, you may want to start thinking about a backup plan.

Work will also begin Monday at South Glendale Avenue and West 24th Street. Crews are making storm drainage repairs, with the project expected to take about a month. Drivers are being asked to use other neighborhood streets while the work is underway.

The orange cones keep coming, this time in the area of East 18th Street and Fourth Avenue. Crews are working on gutter improvements. Traffic will be diverted to 19th Street at Third Avenue. Parking in the area will be restricted, and the sidewalk on the south side of 18th Street will also be closed during construction. The good news is this project is expected to be finished in a couple of weeks.

Also starting on Monday, August 3, drivers will encounter changes around South Eighth Avenue and South Ninth Avenue as crews install curb ramps. The alley between Eighth and Ninth avenues will be closed at 26th Street. Meanwhile, the westbound lane of East 26th Street will be closed between Tenth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, with westbound traffic shifted into the center lane. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on East 26th Street. The changes are expected to last about a week.

Starting Tuesday, August 4, crews will begin sanitary sewer repairs at various locations between North Meyer Lane and North Sycamore Avenue and between East Sixth Street and East Tenth Street. This one could be a little unpredictable for drivers because there will be intermittent short-term lane restrictions, road closures, and driveway access restrictions as crews move through the area. The work is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

And finally, starting Wednesday, August 5, North Career Avenue will close from Terry Avenue north of the HUB at Southeast Technical College. The west sidewalk along North Career Avenue next to the HUB will also be closed. Utility work is responsible for this project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the day Wednesday, August 12.

As with every one of these construction projects, drivers are urged to slow down, pay attention to the signs, and give yourself a few extra minutes to get where you're going. It's also highly recommended that you take alternate routes whenever possible.
