
Vermillion Scores Big with Two Major Honors in One Week
Vermillion's Celebrated Achievements
Dakota News Now is reporting that the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company shared exciting news this week, announcing that the city of Vermillion has earned two major honors.
First, the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development selected Vermillion as its “Community of the Year.” In addition, Vermillion was voted “Best Small Town Arts Scene” in the USA TODAY 10BEST Reader’s Choice Awards.

Honoring Vermillion's Community Spirit
Mayor Jon Cole said the back-to-back recognitions made it a memorable week for the community. He called it an honor for Vermillion to be recognized not only for its overall growth and progress, but also for its vibrant arts scene, which has received national attention more than once.
The Community of the Year award highlights Vermillion’s dedication to economic development. City leaders have focused on expanding housing options, supporting new and existing businesses, and strengthening the workforce. Efforts to improve childcare availability have also played a key role in the city’s growth strategy.
Building Vermillion's Future and A Calendar Full of Culture
According to Jim Peterson, president and CEO of the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company, the city’s approach to development aligns closely with state leadership’s pro-growth mindset. He credited a strong board of directors and unified community leaders for helping move Vermillion forward and making it an attractive place for investment.

The Best Small Town Arts Scene award was determined through nominations reviewed by experts and editors, followed by a nationwide public vote. Mayor Cole noted that Vermillion’s busy calendar of performances, exhibits, and cultural events shows there’s rarely a slow weekend in town. He said the award reflects the dedication of local artists, organizations, and residents who make arts and culture central to the community’s identity.
