Vermillion Teen Ready to Wow At National Scholarhip Competition
One South Dakota teen driven by dreams, determination, and a strong sense of community has begun an interesting journey by participating in a prestigious national scholarship program.
The Distinguished Young Women of America encourage young women to "reach their full potential". The organization provides over "$1 billion in scholarship opportunities, connecting with a nationwide network of women, developing their self-confidence, and participating in our Life Skills Workshops that prepare them for success after high school."
Paige Pederson, daughter of Wendy and Paul Pederson of Vermillion, was honored to be chosen the South Dakota Distinguished Young Woman of America and will go on to represent our state at the national competition.
There are five categories that the young women will be evaluated in, including, scholastics, interview, fitness, talent, and self-expression.
While spending two weeks in Mobile, Alabama, the young women participate in team-building activities, community service projects, and events, as well as spending time rehearsing for the final competition.
If Paige wins the national title she will spend the next year representing South Dakota and the U.S. at events across the country "promoting the program’s national outreach initiative of Be Your Best Self."
This program combats problems facing children in the U.S. including childhood obesity and dropout rates as well as encouraging young people to participate in community service.
Good luck to this talented young South Dakota scholar who is inspiring her peers, her community, and her state in her quest for this national recognition!
