There are over 150 Diverging Diamond Interchanges in the United States with 80 more under construction. 3 of which are in South Dakota cities including Sioux Falls, Brandon, and Rapid City.

Construction began on the Sioux Falls DDI in 2022 and is near completion.

The current traffic pattern is in a more simplified DDI configuration with one lane in each direction over the bridge. All lanes of the DDI are anticipated to open at the end of June.

All on- and off-ramps are open except for westbound traffic on the northbound off-ramp.

When taking the northbound off-ramp from I-29, the left-turning lane is currently closed to traffic, and motorists can only turn right on to 41st Street.

Sidewalks across the 41st Street bridge will remain closed until other construction work is completed.

Here is the latest update on the Sioux Falls Diverging Diamond Interchange at 41st and I-229...

  • Permanent pavement marking will begin in mid-June.
  • Installation of sidewalks across the 41st Street bridge has been completed; sidewalks will remain closed until other work is completed.
  • Pedestrian signals have been installed at both ends of the DDI and are scheduled to be functional by mid-June.
  • Crews have completed installing walls around the center median.
  • Crews are painting underneath the bridge.
  • Crews are beginning final touches and landscaping on the medians.
  • Drivers are urged to use caution and reduce their speed while traveling through the area. Traffic control measures will continue to guide motorists around all closures.
