Drivers in Sioux Falls should prepare for several road closures and lane restrictions beginning this week as multiple construction and utility projects get underway across the city.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down in work zones, watch for crews and flaggers, and consider alternate routes whenever possible.

Ellis Road Lane Closures Begin May 25

Starting Monday, May 25, daytime lane closures will take place along Ellis Road at West 46th Street. Flaggers will direct traffic through the area while roadway and utility improvements continue along 46th Street between Ellis Road and Klein Avenue.

Officials expect the daytime closure work on Ellis Road to last about two weeks.

North Minnesota Avenue Lane and Sidewalk Closures

Beginning Tuesday, May 19, at 8:30 a.m., the outside northbound lane of North Minnesota Avenue from West Ninth Street into the current construction zone will be closed. Several sidewalks in the area will also be temporarily shut down, with pedestrian detours posted.

Stein Sign Display crews will be using a crane for sign installation work. Traffic control is expected to remain in place through the end of the day Friday, May 22.

West Blackhawk Street Closed Through May 26

West Blackhawk Street will close between North Minnesota Avenue and A Avenue beginning Tuesday morning, May 19, at 8:30 a.m. Runge Enterprises Inc. will install new utilities in the area.
Drivers will be detoured to West Algonquin Street or Russell Street.

The closure is expected to remain in place through May 26.

South Sheldon Lane Closure

Also beginning Tuesday morning, South Sheldon Lane between West 41st Street and Angie Place will close while the Water Department installs a new fire hydrant. The west sidewalk will also be closed, with pedestrians detoured to the east sidewalk.

The project is expected to wrap up by the end of the day.

Russell Street Lane Closures Continue Into Summer

Starting Wednesday, May 20, the outside and center westbound lanes of West Russell Street between Minnesota Avenue and West Avenue will be closed for concrete repairs, curb and gutter work, and joint resealing.

At least one westbound lane will remain open at all times, and access to businesses and homes will be maintained. Officials say this phase of work should finish in early July, though construction on Russell Street is expected to continue through October 2026.
