It won't be official until next week, but the leaves are already dropping, the trees are starting to show their colors, and people are getting ready for fall. A sure sign that it is right around the corner is the Sioux Falls leaf and branch drop-off sites opening for business.

The city will open two of these sites tomorrow, Saturday, September 20, and they'll remain open until Sunday, November 20. The two sites are located at North Lyon Boulevard, near the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds, and on Chambers Street, near the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Both sites are open from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 5 PM on Sunday.

The sites are free for residents to use and are available to people living in Sioux Falls and the five-county region served by the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill, including Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties.

The sites are for residential use only. Cars, pickups, full-size SUVs, vans, and trailers are accepted. Lawn service companies and commercial businesses will not be accepted and must go directly to the Sioux Falls Regional Landfill. All loads must be secured with a tarp or transported in an enclosed vehicle.

There will be separate piles for leaves and branches, and there will be signs telling you where to unload your yard waste. Everything must be removed from plastic bags, but paper bags are okay. You cannot bring out plastic bags, stumps, rubble, or household garbage.

Collected branches are ground into mulch, and leaves are turned into compost, which residents can take for free while supplies last. For more information, see the City of Sioux Falls website.
