Hear that sound? It's your kid's summer vacation circling the drain.

For Sioux Falls kids, the countdown to the first day of school is officially on. Students across the Sioux Falls School District will head back to the classroom on Thursday, August 27, which means backpacks are about to be packed, school supplies are being gathered, and parents everywhere are realizing that those cherished summer mornings of sleeping in are almost over.

But while students are preparing to head back, there are also sixty-three people getting ready for their very first year on the other side of the desk.

Sixty-three first-time teachers will be joining the Sioux Falls School District this fall. And thanks to a grant from the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation, those new teachers won't have to completely empty their own wallets when it comes to getting their classrooms ready.

Each first-year teacher will receive a $250 classroom grant to spend on items that can help make their classroom a more welcoming, engaging, and a more productive place for students to learn.

And if you've ever talked to a teacher, you know that a $250 grant is a welcome thing, but it can disappear pretty quickly, too.

Think classroom supplies, organizational tools, educational materials, books, decorations, or those little extras that can make a big difference for students. Teachers know better than anyone that sometimes the thing a classroom needs most isn't sitting neatly on the district-approved supply list.

According to Dakota News Now, teachers get to decide exactly how to spend the money based on the needs of their individual classrooms.

Allison Struck, executive director of the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation, told Dakota News Now, "Those needs can look very different depending on where a teacher works."

An elementary teacher might use the money for classroom materials or supplies that help younger students learn. Meanwhile, an AP teacher at one of Sioux Falls' high schools could have an entirely different set of needs.

This isn't a one-size-fits-all shopping list.

Teachers are the ones who will be standing in front of their classrooms every day. They know what their students need, what their classrooms are missing, and what might help turn a good learning environment into a great one.

For a first-year teacher, that kind of flexibility can be especially valuable. Starting a teaching career is exciting enough without having to worry about whether you can afford the extra supplies that weren't included in the school budget.

That $250 may not sound like a fortune, but for a new teacher preparing for that first classroom experience, it can make a meaningful difference.

The classroom grants are just one example of how the Sioux Falls community can support educators as they begin their careers. After all, those sixty-three new teachers aren't simply starting new jobs; they're about to become an important part of the lives of hundreds, and potentially thousands, of your kids here in Sioux Falls.

So, as you tackle your own back-to-school shopping this year, don't be surprised if you spot a teacher, or two, or three, right there with you in the school supplies aisle. More than likely, they’ll be out there loading up on #2 pencils, notebooks, highlighters, organizers, and USB drives too.
