Top 4 Signs Your Christmas Tree Will Be Dead By Christmas
Nothing dampens holiday cheer quite like a freshly cut Christmas tree that gives up before December 25th arrives.
If you've noticed your freshly cut tree looking less than festive, you're not alone.
According to experts at The Spruce, there are four telltale warning signs that your tree is in trouble.
1. Water Uptake Slows or Stops
A healthy tree can drink up to a quart of water per day for every inch of trunk diameter. If you're noticing the water level in your stand staying constant for days, your tree has stopped hydrating itself.
This is often the first red flag that something's wrong, and it means the tree's days are numbered.
2. Dry, Brittle, or Drooping Branches
When branches that once held your ornaments proudly now sag or feel stiff to the touch, dehydration has set in.
Fresh tree needles should be flexible and slightly soft. If they're brittle enough to snap easily or the branches are drooping despite adequate support, your tree is struggling.
3. Loss of Fragrance or Musty Odor
That wonderful pine scent should fill your home throughout the season. If the fresh evergreen aroma fades or, worse, develops a musty or stale smell, it indicates your tree is declining.
A foul odor often means the base water has become stagnant or the trunk is beginning to rot.
4. Dropping Needles
While a few fallen needles are normal, excessive needle drop is the most obvious warning sign.
If you're vacuuming needles daily or notice bare patches forming on branches, your tree won't make it to Christmas without becoming a fire hazard.
Keep your tree fresh by maintaining water levels daily and placing it away from heat sources.
