FDA Issues Risk Factor Level in Candy Recall Affecting South Dakota
The FDA has finally issued a risk factor classification tied to recalled candy products that were distributed to various stores in South Dakota and other states.
Back in May of this year, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the Palmer Candy Company based out of Sioux City, Iowa issued a recall on some items Palmer produces that use a white-coated confectionary that could be contaminated with Salmonella.
Dakota News Now is reporting that later in the month (May 17), an update to that recall was issued, which included additional items, and products that were identified by their best-by dates.
On (August 6) the FDA issued its risk classification findings associated with the recall notification. An action that typically takes place a short time after a recall has been issued as the organization works to better identify risk factors.
According to Dakota News Now, when the FDA issues a recall there are three classifications:
- Class I: The most severe type of recall, in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
- Class II: Use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
- Class III: The product is unlikely to cause health issues, but there’s still a chance, so it’s being recalled.
Before the (August 6) date, the FDA had not issued a classification risk on the recalled products being produced by the Palmer Candy Company. However, during that time, Dakota News Now reports the Palmer Candy Company had been working closely with the FDA to complete a review of all the recalled products.
Upon the completion of the review, the FDA's findings revealed that a Class 2 classification was issued to the coating supplier, while a Class 1 designation was given to the supplier of the ingredient to the coating supplier.
It should be known that since the recall was issued, there have been no reported illnesses or any other impacts from products included in the recall.
The recalled items were distributed nationwide to Walmart, HyVee, Target, Dollar General Stores, and to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
