South Dakotans will witness an extraordinary celestial event this month when the only Black Moon of 2025 occurs.

On Sat., August 23rd, this rare astronomical phenomenon called the 'Black Moon' will be making it a truly special occasion for stargazers across South Dakota and the rest of the nation.

While the moon will not be visible, it offers excellent conditions for stargazing due to the lack of moonlight.

A Black Moon is what's known as a seasonal Black Moon, the third New Moon in an astronomical season of four New Moons (instead of the usual three).

Unlike a regular new moon, this rare event occurs around once every 33 months, making it significantly more uncommon than typical lunar phases.

While the Black Moon itself will be invisible to the naked eye, as it's essentially a new moon phase, its absence will create unusually dark skies, offering an ideal opportunity for deep-space observation.

This presents a perfect chance for amateur astronomers and stargazing enthusiasts throughout South Dakota to observe distant galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters without the interference of moonlight.

The phenomenon represents a "glitch in the time matrix" that arose from our attempt to "squeeze" the flexible lunar cycle into the rigid framework of the Gregorian calendar.

According to IFLScience, it will be a seasonal black moon, meaning it's the fourth new moon within a single astronomical season, a phenomenon that won't happen again until 2027.

For South Dakota residents, this Black Moon offers an exceptional opportunity to experience some of the darkest night skies of the year, perfect for photography, meditation under the stars, or simply appreciating the cosmic wonder above the Great Plains.
