Sioux Falls Bakery Survives ‘Great Cupcake Catastrophe’ of 2026
Local Sioux Falls businesses are resilient and have navigated through tough times. But one Sioux Falls bakery known for its delicious cupcakes had “a bit of a mishap” over the weekend.
The "Cupcake Ninjas" at Oh My Cupcakes! in Sioux Falls were hard at work on the shop. Cupcakes were ready to be delivered to the East Side location when the unexpected happened....a large gust of wind ruined tasty cupcakes. Noooo!

This is worst than a kid dropping his ice cream on the floor. Dozens of cupcakes destroyed last weekend thanks to our favorite South Dakota winds.

Welcome to "The Great Cupcake Catastrophe 2026!" This mishap is the main reason why the East Side store opened later than usual. Here's what happened:
It was approximately 9:00 AM
A speed rack filled with perfectly decorated cupcakes was loaded and ready to make its journey to our East side location.
Beautiful cupcakes.
Delicious cupcakes.
Cupcakes with their whole happy lives ahead of them.
The first part of their journey was uneventful. Just a regular Saturday, right?
And THEN.
There was a wind gust. A gasp.
Hands lifted to foreheads in disbelief. There may have been swear words, but this is unconfirmed.
What we do know is that gravity had made her decision and the cupcakes went airborne. Chocolate. Vanilla. Red velvet. Sprinkles and buttercream. Tumbling, whirling, cutting through the mid-morning air.
Oh My Cupcakes! even shared the scene of the crime in a viral Facebook post.
Needless to say after this accident, the Cupcake Ninjas were shocked. But they quickly cleaned up and did some emergency re-baking. I spoke with Melissa Johnson of Oh My Cupcakes! and she couldn't be prouder of her team. It's a labor of love to bake these yummy desserts. She explains "how freaking hard the girls in the kitchen worked to come back from that mess." Trust me, it shows!

Do me a favor and visit our friends at Oh My Cupcakes!. Having a cupcake will help ease their pain after a rough Labor Day weekend.
