2026 South Dakota Pheasant Season Laws You Need To Know
South Dakota’s pheasant hunting tradition returns this fall, and hunters will want to know the important dates and rules before heading into the fields.
South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Laws for 2026
1. Know the Season Dates – The regular pheasant season runs October 17, 2026, through January 31, 2027.
2. Youth Hunt Comes First – The youth-only season runs September 26 through October 4. Youth hunters must be accompanied by an unarmed adult.
3. Residents Get an Early Opportunity – The resident-only season is October 10–12, with hunting limited to eligible public-access lands.
4. Three Roosters Per Day – The regular daily limit is 3 rooster pheasants.
5. The Possession Limit Is 15 – You can possess up to 15 rooster pheasants, but you can't reach that number in one weekend. The limit accrues at 3 birds per day.
6. Shooting Starts at 10 a.m. – Pheasant shooting hours are 10 a.m. Central Time until sunset statewide.
7. You Need the Right License – Residents generally need a Small Game License, qualifying Combination License, Youth License or 1-Day Small Game License. Nonresidents have specific small-game license requirements.
8. Don't Forget the Habitat Stamp – A Habitat Stamp is required with your first license purchase.
9. Know Where You Can Hunt – South Dakota offers plenty of public hunting opportunities, but some refuges and special areas have different opening dates or restrictions.
10. Know the Road Rules – Hunting from public road rights-of-way has specific restrictions. Don't assume every roadside ditch is fair game.
Bottom line: Before you grab the shotgun, dog and orange vest, check the latest South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks regulations.
A little homework could keep your pheasant hunt from turning into a very expensive bird hunt.
