As a former dog owner, of two beautiful German Shepherds, I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know all of the rules and regulations of dog ownership. Much of what I did as a dog owner came from years of prior ownership, common sense, and advice from vets and other knowledgeable dog experts (in print and in person).

But there are city ordinances you must follow or risk fines & other legal ramifications.

How Many Dogs Can You Legally Own?

Here in Sioux Falls, the legal limit is four. "It is unlawful for any person to have or to keep more than four domestic pets over the age of six months, except birds and fish, on any lot or premises in the city". -Sioux Falls Ordinance 90.015

Do You Need to License Your Pet

You must license every dog (and cat) that you have in your home. For each spayed or neutered animal you own,(and unless you're a breeder - they should all be) the fee is $5 per year or $15 for 3 years.

Does Your Dog Always Need to Be Leashed?

The simple answer is yes, which I'm sure comes as a surprise to some dog owners. And this is anytime your dog is off your property- - "Except on property designated by the city as an animal off-leash area"-Sioux Falls Ordinance 90.002

What Vaccinations Does Your Dog Need?

Every dog six months of age or older is required to receive a rabies vaccination.

Do You Have to Clean Up After Your Pet?

Anytime your pet goes potty other than on your property, you have to clean it up immediately.

What About Barking?

This falls under the "disturbing the peace" section of pet ordinances. Yes, if your dog makes a nuisance of itself, it can be impounded. Everybody hates a barky dog, big or little!

You can find all of these ordinances in Chapter 90 of the Sioux Falls Code Library from American Legal Publishing.

9 Sioux Falls Streets Visitors Have A Hard Time Pronouncing

If you are visiting or new to Sioux Falls and trying to find your way around, chances are you really don't need to pronounce street names correctly. All you have to do is enter your destination into Google Maps and your phone will show you the way.

But what if you are trying to tell someone where your cool friend or family member lives in our fine city? Some of our streets and avenues have tricky spellings that may throw visitors for a loop when trying to sound them out.

No one is going to mess up on the big thoroughfares like Minnesota Avenue, Western Avenue, or Louise Avenue but what about these?
