Three Waterfalls Destinations Worth The Drive From Sioux Falls
When most people in the Sioux Empire hear the word "waterfall," their minds immediately jump to the roaring cascades found inside Falls Park. Duh, right! Sioux Falls is literally named after them. They're one of the city's biggest attractions and are often considered among the most impressive urban waterfalls anywhere in the country.
But here's something many Sioux Falls residents don't realize: if you're willing to venture just a little beyond city limits, there are several other waterfalls within a short drive of Sioux Falls that are well worth some travel time. No, they won't rival the power and size of Falls Park, but they do offer something just as valuable: a peaceful escape, beautiful scenery, and a fun excuse for a little afternoon road trip.
One of those destinations is about 30 minutes northeast of Sioux Falls near Garretson, South Dakota. Palisades State Park is famous for its towering pink Sioux quartzite cliffs that rise dramatically above Split Rock Creek. It's a favorite destination for hikers, photographers, and rock climbers. What many visitors overlook, however, is that Split Rock Creek also features several small waterfalls and gentle cascades, especially after periods of heavy rainfall. While these falls aren't huge, they do add a little charm to an already stunning landscape. If you've been looking for a new spot to snap family photos, selfies, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon outdoors, this hidden gem deserves a spot on your summer bucket list.

If you're up for a little longer road trip, one of the region's most scenic waterfalls awaits about an hour and 15 minutes east of Sioux Falls at Pipestone National Monument in Pipestone, Minnesota. Winnewissa Falls drops roughly 18 feet over ancient quartzite rock, creating a picturesque scene that's especially impressive after a good rain. Better yet, it's an easy walk from the visitor center, making it accessible for nearly everyone.
The best part? Admission to Pipestone National Monument is completely free. After checking out the falls, you can explore miles of scenic walking trails, prairie landscapes, and the monument's rich Native American history, making it an easy destination to spend several hours.
Finally, about two hours northeast of Sioux Falls near Lynd, Minnesota, you'll find Camden State Park, one of southwestern Minnesota's most underrated outdoor destinations.
The park features Lower Falls along the Redwood River, along with several smaller cascades tucked among wooded valleys and hiking trails. The combination of flowing water, dense trees, and rolling terrain makes it feel like you've traveled much farther from home than you actually have. Camden State Park offers a relaxing getaway that's close enough to make for a nice spontaneous day trip getaway.

As spectacular as Falls Park is, and let's be honest, it will always be the crown jewel of Sioux Falls, it's nice to know there are other waterfalls waiting to be discovered just beyond South Dakota's largest city. So, whether you're chasing scenic overlooks at Palisades, taking in the beauty of Winnewissa Falls, or spending the day hiking around Camden State Park, all three of these destinations prove you don't have to travel to the Black Hills or northern Minnesota to enjoy the sights and sounds Mother Nature has to offer outdoors lovers in and around Sioux Falls.
