he Children’s Museum of South Dakota is celebrating a milestone—15 years of sparking curiosity, creativity, and connection with a special event on Saturday, September 20, from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Since opening its doors in downtown Brookings in 2010, the museum has welcomed nearly 1.5 million children and families from every state and dozens of countries.

They've all come to explore hands-on exhibits, interactive activities, and imaginative play spaces designed to inspire learning through discovery.

This anniversary isn’t just about children. The museum reminds visitors that play is vital for everyone, no matter their age. Adults are encouraged to join in the fun, whether it’s building in the Maker Studio, experimenting in the water exhibit, or creating stories on KidStreet.

By playing alongside their children, parents and caregivers strengthen bonds, nurture creativity, and rediscover their own sense of wonder.

Research shows that play fuels problem-solving skills, confidence, and emotional growth. For adults, it offers stress relief and a chance to step away from daily routines.

This Saturday's free activities on the lawn include:

  • Lakota Cultural demonstration with dance and storytelling
  • A community art project
  • Tye dye station to create your own museum celebration shirt
  • Do-it-yourself face painting
  • Sidewalk chalk, bubble machine, and Kidoodle mascot appearances
  • A toddler/early childhood play area

In addition:

  • Cafe Coteau will offer a $5 community meal of Breakfast Tacos from 10 AM to 1 PM
  • The gift shop, Play Central Toys & Books, will offer a 15% discount to museum members all day long

**The event is free, but admission to the museum requires paid admission or membership. **
