Celebrate Sioux Falls Earth Day In A Big Way!
This annual event has become one of those Sioux Falls traditions that also signals the beginning of spring!
Once again, the Big Sioux River Greenway Cleanup is happening on a Saturday in Earth Month
The City of Sioux Falls invites residents to participate in this upcoming event celebrating our planet and green spaces. On Saturday, April 20th, the city will host the 9th annual Big Sioux River Greenway Cleanup followed by an inaugural Earth Day Festival.
The Big Sioux River Greenway Cleanup is held in partnership with Friends of the Big Sioux River and will take place from 10 AM to noon on Saturday, April 20th. Volunteers are needed to collect trash and debris from recreation areas along the Big Sioux River Greenway.
Volunteers can check in at one of seven sites: Falls Park Farmers Market Shelter, Cherry Rock Park, Pasley Park, Yankton Trail Park, Sertoma Park, Legacy Park, or Elmwood Park.
Advance sign-up is encouraged, but not required. All volunteers will receive supplies (bags and gloves) and must sign a waiver. Children under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
After the cleanup, the fun continues with the city's inaugural Earth Day Festival at Great Bear Ski Valley from 1 to 5 PM. This free family event features hands-on activities like a Trail Scavenger Hunt, Tote Bag Decorating, Free Mini Planting Kits, and Educational Booths.

Thousands of pounds of trash have been removed from the Big Sioux River Greenway area over the years, according to Josh Peterson, the Sioux Falls Environmental Services Manager. "The turnout grows annually, which is fantastic to see people of all ages rallying to care for the river."
