Catch & Release Fishing Dates Run Through Sept. At Lake Lorraine

Think you've discovered all there is to do in Sioux Falls, you might have overlooked one of the city's true hidden gems, Lake Lorraine. While plenty of us know it as the place to grab dinner, shop, or enjoy a walk around the water, many people don't realize it's also a fun spot on occasion to cast a fishing line.

Tonight is going to be one of those nights.

Lake Lorraine has become one of Sioux Falls' premier lifestyle destinations, offering everything from restaurants and retail shopping to paddle boarding, pedal boats, yoga classes, seasonal farmers markets, and plenty of family-friendly events throughout the year. But one of its most popular pop-up activities is making a return again tonight, and it's perfect for anglers of every skill level.

If you've been looking for an excuse to dust off your fishing pole, another Lake Lorraine Catch & Release Fishing Date is happening Thursday, July 16, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on the west side of the lake.

And yes...there really are fish in that water.

I can personally vouch for it. During my early morning runs around Lake Lorraine, just after sunrise, the lake is alive with fish jumping in and out of the water. Some mornings it looks like they're putting on their own version of a synchronized swimming competition.

According to South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, Lake Lorraine is home to Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Perch, and Bluegill. In other words, there's plenty of fish stories swimming beneath the surface ready to be reeled in.

The event is designed for everyone, whether you've been fishing your entire life or have never baited a hook before. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks staff will be on-site to help beginners learn the basics, and they'll even provide fishing equipment if you don't have your own. That's right, you don't need a fishing pole or a tackle box the size of a suitcase; all that's required is a little luck to catch "the big one."

Just bring yourself and a little patience. Who knows? By the end of the evening, you might actually have your very own "one that got away" story to tell.

If you can't make tonight's event, don't worry. Two additional Catch & Release Fishing Dates are scheduled for Thursday, August 20, and Thursday, September 17; both events run from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
