Ladies if you sleep on your stomach, stop! Unless of course you're a fan of wrinkles.

Just like your mother used to say, "if you make your face like that, it will stay that way!" Come to find out, she just might be right.

Dermatologists claim that sleeping with your face a certain way on the pillow can leave your face just as it is when sleeping, creased and wrinkled.

Skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. As your skin gets older, it also gets thinner and the subcutaneous layer manufacturing the cells needed to fill in the thin skin decreases in turnover.

The natural aging process isn't the only thing that has it in for your skin. You can also thank sun damage, free radicals, hormones, muscle use and gravity for wrinkles.

Gravity can pull the face down and accentuate wrinkles. For that reason, sleeping only on your face increases the gravitational pull. Age we age, skin loses functionality, sleep position-induced wrinkles result from repetitive pressure on the face. People who sleep on their sides night after night have a tendency to see wrinkles appear on their chin and cheeks. Those who sleep with their face smashed into a pillow, tend to develop wrinkles on their foreheads.

Research has found that people who sleep on their backs can actually reverse gravity's effects and will not see pillow-induced wrinkles.

So what is the lesson to be learned here? To help avoid looking like your 57 when you're actually only 30 years old, listen to your mother and consider sleeping on your back from now on.

Sweet dreams!
