What St. Francis House ‘Walk A Mile In My Shoes’ Is All About?
The St. Francis House in Sioux Falls is all about moving people from homelessness to hope and doing so with mutual respect and without judgment.
What the "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" event on Saturday, November 23, is all about is bringing people together from across the city to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness during "Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month".
You can register online or on Saturday, at 10:30 AM with the mile walk set to begin at 11 AM rain or shine.
Participants are asked to fill a new or gently used backpack with 15 pounds of canned goods, other non-perishable food items, gloves, scarves, thermals, socks, and other warm clothing items, as well as personal hygiene items like shampoo, toothpaste, and more.
The reason for the backpack is a reminder that many of the St. Francis House guests arrive with all of their possessions in a backpack and without proper shoes to wear. So this mile walk is a chance for the community to "walk a mile in their shoes".
The walk will begin at the memorial for the homeless in our community at 6th Street and the Big Sioux River (behind the Lutheran Social Services building).
You can register and get more information at the St. Francis House website or call 605-334-3879 ext 11.
If you're not able to join the walk, you can still participate by dropping off a backpack filled with items at the St. Francis House from 8 AM to 8 PM at 210 North Sherman Avenue in Sioux Falls.
Plus, you can always check out the needs list on the St. Francis House website.
