The rankings are based on 20 key metrics, including the number of casinos, gaming machines, gambling prevalence, and access to treatment programs.

The Landscape of Gambling in South Dakota

One of the biggest factors behind South Dakota’s high ranking is accessibility. The state is tied for having one of the highest numbers of casinos and gaming machines per capita in the nation, making gambling widely available to residents.

In addition, South Dakota offers multiple legal forms of gambling, including sports betting, fantasy sports, horse racing, and video lottery machines in bars and convenience stores.

That level of access can come with consequences.

Experts say widespread availability can increase the risk of gambling-related problems, especially when combined with limited awareness or treatment resources. In South Dakota, about 1.4% of adults are estimated to have problematic gambling behavior, according to national data.

The Importance of Awareness and Support in Gambling Addiction

The WalletHub report also noted that South Dakota has a relatively high number of Gamblers Anonymous meetings per capita - an indicator that many residents are seeking help.
