Why South Dakota Stands Out

If life feels a little calmer in South Dakota, it’s not just your imagination. A new study from Wallet Hub (Most & Least Stressed States) has ranked South Dakota as the least stressed state in the country, putting it at the very bottom of stress levels nationwide—and at the very top when it comes to peace of mind.

To determine stress levels across the U.S., WalletHub compared all 50 states using dozens of metrics across four major categories:

  • Work-related stress
  • Money-related stress
  • Family-related stress
  • Health and safety stress

These factors include everything from hours worked and job security to divorce rates, crime levels, and even how much sleep people get.

South Dakota’s top ranking didn’t happen by accident. The state consistently performs well in areas that directly impact everyday stress, including:

  • Lower cost of living compared to many parts of the country
  • Shorter commute times and less congestion
  • Stronger sense of community, especially in smaller towns
  • Access to open space and outdoor recreation, which supports mental health

WalletHub data and similar rankings often show that Midwestern states - like South Dakota - benefit from a slower pace of life and fewer financial pressures compared to other areas of the country.

The South Dakota Lifestyle: Stress-Free Living

This isn’t the first time South Dakota has landed near the top for quality of life. The state has also ranked highly in other WalletHub studies, including:

  • Among the best states to live in, thanks to affordability and housing costs
  • Near the top for retirement destinations, with strong healthcare access and low taxes

All of these factors contribute to lower overall stress.
