
Know The Rules Before Lighting Up Those Fireworks This July
We love our fireworks in South Dakota!
In 2024, 17 million dollars worth of fireworks were sold in South Dakota, with Minnehaha and Lincoln counties coming in first and second for sales.
But there is a downside to having all those fireworks. According to a study reported by Dakota News Now, South Dakota ranked first in fireworks-related injuries from June through August of 2023. Also, in that same year, South Dakota ranked 4th in the amount of money spent on fireworks per capita.

So it's time again to talk about firework safety and South Dakota's rules and regulations for fireworks.
Some things to remember as the Fourth of July approaches
South Dakota residents can only purchase fireworks from June 27 through July 5.
You cannot use fireworks at any state parks or wildlife areas or any state land owned or leased by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
Hood Magazine has these reminders about fireworks in the Sioux Falls area:
- It's illegal to shoot most fireworks in the Sioux Falls city limits. They cannot make any noise or have launching components.
- Fireworks like snakes, smoke balls, and sparklers are generally permitted
- Violators can be fined and have their fireworks confiscated
Tea has specific guidelines for fireworks:
- Fireworks are allowed on July 3, 4, and 5 from noon to midnight
- Any consumer fireworks are allowed
Harrisburg has rules similar to Tea:
- Fireworks are permitted from June 30 through July 4
- Times that fireworks are allowed - From 12 pm to 11 pm on July 3, July 4, Fridays, and Saturdays. On all other days, the times allowed are from 12 PM to 10 PM.
- The city is hosting a Fireworks show at dusk. It is set up north of the Central Park ball fields
Brandon regulations:
- Fireworks may be shot within the city limits on July 3rd and 4th from 10 AM to 11 PM
Lennox guidelines are just like Tea's:
- Fireworks are allowed on July 3, 4, and 5 from noon to midnight
- Any consumer fireworks are allowed
- Lennox always has their big Old-Fashioned 4th of July Event, and at the end of the night, they put on a big fireworks show.

Safety tips for using fireworks from the National Safety Council
- Make sure you have a bucket of water or another water source, an extinguisher, or some other way to put out any accidental fires that may occur.
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks
- Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
- Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person
- Never ignite devices in a container
- Don't try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks
- Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
