Numerous Severe Thunderstorms Possible Tonight Around Sioux Falls
Residents across eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa should stay alert tonight as the threat of severe weather continues to increase.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has expanded the Level 3 of 5 (Enhanced) Risk area farther south, now covering much of the region from Vermillion to Sioux Falls and extending into southwest Minnesota.

The primary concern during the early evening hours will be large hail, with some storms capable of producing hailstones 2 inches in diameter or larger.

As storms organize and move east and northeast through the evening and overnight hours, the threat is expected to shift toward damaging straight-line winds, with gusts potentially reaching 75 mph.
Meteorologists say scattered thunderstorms will begin developing across central South Dakota and parts of Nebraska during the late afternoon and early evening.
As these storms strengthen, they are expected to merge into larger clusters that will continue tracking eastward throughout the night.
In addition to large hail and damaging winds, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, making this a night to pay close attention to changing weather conditions.
Because many of the strongest storms could occur after dark, weather experts urge residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios, smartphone alerts, and local media updates.
Anyone with outdoor plans this evening should closely monitor forecasts and be prepared to move indoors quickly if severe weather develops.
If a warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
With all severe weather hazards possible tonight, now is the time to review your safety plan and stay weather-aware.
