The recreation trails in Northeastern Sioux Falls are about to get an expansion thanks to the generosity of two area donors.

Jeff and Tammie Broin and the Ashby family of Sioux Falls have donated a total of 1.3 million dollars that will be earmarked toward expanding the recreation trails connecting Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue.

Jenny Kirby, chair of the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation, told Dakota News Now, “We are so grateful to the Broin and Ashby families for their generosity and vision. Because of people like them, we are able to continue to make Sioux Falls a beautiful place to call home.”

Thanks to the donation, Dakota News Now reports that the city plans to update a 1-mile extension, connecting the existing trail from Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue, along with an elevated boardwalk area.

The Broin and the Ashby families love Sioux Falls and want every resident to be able to enjoy its beauty. Both families feel the city's recreational trail is a perfect place to do that.

According to Dakota News Now, the city of Sioux Falls plans to start working on the expansion project of that section of the recreational trail system later this spring.

Sioux Falls has a long history of philanthropic investments in the city's park system. A couple of recent examples include: The Kirby Dog Park at Fort Sod in downtown and the soon-to-be-open Jacobson Plaza at Falls Park.

Once completed, the Jacobson Plaza will feature an all-inclusive playground, an off-leash dog park, a splash pad, and a refrigerated ice skating ribbon.

Construction on the Jacobson Plaza first got underway in the fall of 2023. Barring any delays it is scheduled to open to the public later this year.
