The Sioux Falls City Council is weighing significant changes to alcohol regulations that could reshape how residents enjoy public spaces throughout the city.

The proposed ordinance would expand current restrictions to ban not just drinking alcohol, but also possession of open containers in popular locations like Phillips Avenue Plaza and Falls Park.

According to Dakota News Now, the changes propose banning drinking, attempting to drink or possessing open or unsealed alcoholic beverages in most city parks and public property.

This represents a substantial shift from current policies that have historically been more permissive than many communities.

Key areas targeted for the expanded ban include downtown gathering spaces and major parks where public events and foot traffic are common.

However, the ordinance maintains exceptions for licensed events and designated venues, ensuring that permitted festivals and special occasions can continue as planned.

The timing of this proposal comes as cities nationwide grapple with balancing public enjoyment of spaces with community safety and cleanliness concerns.

The second reading is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, giving residents today to weigh in on the changes.

City officials will need to address enforcement logistics and public education if the ordinance passes.
