Buzz Kill: How Sioux Falls Is Fighting Back Against Pesky Mosquitoes
If you’ve spent more than five minutes outside in Sioux Falls during the summer, you already know what to expect: heat, humidity, and mosquitoes the size of small drones. And while we can’t do much about the weather, the city is taking aim at those buzzing backyard bullies.
According to Dakota News Now, Sioux Falls crews are already in full-on mosquito battle mode, working around the clock to track, test, and knock down populations before they turn your evening BBQ into an all-you-can-eat buffet for them.
Across the city, ultraviolet mosquito traps are quietly doing their thing in neighborhoods, parks, and places where standing water likes to congregate. These traps collect mosquito samples, which are then sent off to labs to be tested for West Nile Virus.

And this isn’t just a minor nuisance issue. Maddi Anderson, the City’s Mosquito Control Program Supervisor, told Dakota News Now that South Dakota consistently ranks among the highest in the nation per capita for West Nile cases. In other words, this is one summer guest we really don’t want showing up.
The good news, so far in 2026, Sioux Falls hasn’t seen any positive West Nile tests. That’s a big win, and a direct result of the city getting aggressive early in the season.
While many of us associate mosquito control with those late-night spray trucks cruising down streets, leaving a scene that looks like something from the movie "The Fog," a lot of the heavy lifting actually happens during the day. Crews are out monitoring standing water, treating problem areas, and staying one step ahead of potential outbreaks.

At the end of the day, Sioux Falls isn’t just trying to make your patio nights more enjoyable; it’s focused on something bigger: disease prevention. So the next time you hear that spray truck roll by, don’t think of it as a nuisance. Think of it as your neighborhood’s tiny, buzzing bodyguard, keeping those tint, buzzing, bloodsuckers in check.
