Major Lane Closures Coming to West 12th Street Bridge

You're Going to Need A Lot Of Patience This Construction Season

Construction season is in full swing already. There are very few city streets that haven't been affected in some way by new projects and old potholes. But that is actually good news, because the more these projects are worked on, the better the traffic flow - eventually. At least that is the hope.

Traffic on the West 12th Street bridge near Grange Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning Monday, June 1, as crews launch phase two of the 12th Street Bridge Preservation project. The lane reductions are expected to remain in place for two to three weeks, weather permitting.

Crews will close the inside eastbound and westbound lanes, as well as the center turn lane. Traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes in both directions.

Brad Ludens, the city of Sioux Falls' principal engineer, said, " We appreciate the public’s patience as crews complete this important maintenance work. This project will help extend the life of the bridge so it can continue serving the traffic needs of the city far into the future.”

Initial Repairs and Upgrades, Plus What's Next?

Phase one of the project included concrete bridge deck repairs on the outside lanes, repairs to deteriorated surface finishes on barrier curbs, tree trimming, chain-link fence replacement, and repairs to a retaining wall coping panel at the southeast corner of the bridge.

Phase two includes concrete bridge deck repairs on the inside lanes, application of a two-coat polymer chip seal, replacement of deteriorated strip seal joints at both ends of the bridge, and installation of permanent pavement markings.

Navigating Construction: Tips for Drivers

Access to nearby properties and businesses will be maintained throughout construction. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible and allow extra travel time.

The work is necessary to maintain the long-term condition and safety of the structure. Drivers should use caution when traveling through the work area and watch for workers and equipment.
