Don't look now, but gas prices are starting ever so slightly to rise again in the Sioux Empire. The average price of unleaded in Sioux Falls at the moment is $2.67 a gallon. The good news, that price is still .12 cents lower than it was at this time last month.

As the weather starts to warm up, folks will begin to hit the holiday road, and you know what that means, it's bound to get even pricer at the gas pump.

The gang at GasBuddy is in the process of sounding that warning now, preparing motorists to brace themselves for our annual pain at the pump.

Each year on average, gas prices are typically the highest during the spring, and they remain on the high side throughout the summer months.

Funny how that seems to happen just when more and more people hop behind the wheel for their annual spring and summer vacations, right?

The Memorial Day Weekend is usually when gas prices hit their peak. They typically won't start to decline until the fall and winter months come rolling around.

According to GasBuddy, gas prices are going to continue to be predicated on the country's ability to navigate situations like the wars going on in Ukraine and the Middle East right now. The various wars and the state of the global economy all will have a bearing on fuel prices in the coming months.

Here's a bit of good news, however, fuel prices in 2024 are expected to be somewhat lower than they were during the previous two years.

GasBuddy is predicting the average price of a gallon of gas in 2024 will range anywhere from $3.20 to $3.52 a gallon here in South Dakota. If their predictions hold true, we can expect to see some fairly significant spikes at the pump in the weeks and months to come.

But even with the coming price hikes, fuel prices are still expected to be 12% lower this year than they were in 2022.

Another one of life's little victories I guess. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the GasBuddy folks know what they are talking about!
