Watch Out For Fake Parking Ticket Texts In South Dakota
Have you received a text message recently claiming you have some unpaid parking tickets, and you need to settle up immediately, or face legal action? It's a scam!
My father-in-law received one of these texts over the weekend. They are circulating throughout the state at the moment, and the South Dakota Department of Public Safety is helping to spread the word.
Dakota News Now reports that, should you receive one of these text messages, don't panic; it's not legitimate.

First off, the State of South Dakota does not send traffic ticket messages via text!
According to Dakota News Now, the message will appear as if it's coming from the "South Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles." It's also going to include threatening language that might resemble something like:
“South Dakota Department of Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 10. Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes.”
If you receive one of these text messages, do not click on any of the links or attachments inside. Nor should you respond to the texts, send any payments, or provide any personal or financial information.

What you should do is verify any potential unpaid parking tickets through the proper channels, such as contacting your local Clerk of Courts Office or the South Dakota Unified Judicial System.
It's also highly recommended that you report any suspicious messages to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986 or consumerhelp@state.sd.us.
