Drivers rely on their vehicles to get them safely where they need to go, which is why automobile recalls often draw so much attention. This week, Kia owners received an important alert about a safety issue affecting one of the company’s most popular sedans. A newly announced recall aims to fix a problem that could potentially put drivers and passengers at risk.

Kia is recalling about 250,000 of its K5 sedans after discovering a defect that could cause the vehicles’ fuel tanks to melt, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affects cars from the 2021 through 2024 model years.

Officials say the issue involves a damaged valve that allows too much air to enter the fuel tank. When this happens, the tank can expand and come into contact with hot exhaust components. This can cause the tank to melt, creating a serious fire hazard. The NHTSA warns that “a melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.”

Kia is alerting owners and offering free repairs. Dealers will replace the faulty valves and inspect the fuel tanks for any signs of damage. If a tank has melted or shows wear, it will be replaced at no cost to the driver.

The agency says drivers might notice early warning signs if their vehicle is affected. These include a popping sound from the fuel tank area, a check engine light turning on, or the car running roughly. Owners of 2021–2024 K5 models are encouraged to schedule an inspection as soon as they receive the recall notice.
