Forecast Change: New Snow Totals Predicted for Minnesota Spring Storm

Update: New Snowfall Prediction Issued for Massive Minnesota Storm

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- There’s been a change in the forecasted Spring snowstorm that’s targeting Minnesota. 

The system is still expected to move into Minnesota Thursday night and drop plowable snow. Previous forecasts had predicted as much as seven inches of snow was possible to fall in some communities in southern Minnesota. 

Rochester 68% chance of getting at least four inches of snow Thursday night, according to Tuesday’s forecast.

The large snow system was also forecasted to stretch from the Fargo-Moorhead area to extreme southeastern Wisconsin. 

New Minnesota Snow Totals Predicted in Updated Forecast

A new prediction issued Wednesday morning predicts a more concentrated area of the heaviest snow accumulation. The National Weather Service's updated forecast has downgraded the likelihood of southeast Minnesota receiving four or more inches of snow. 

Rochester now has a 48% chance of receiving 4+ inches of snow Thursday. The chances of that much snow falling in Austin has plummeted to 20%. 

There’s a 41% of four or more inches of snow falling in Preston and Faribault now has a 33% chance of seeing at least four inches of snow. Communities along the Mississippi River in southeast Minnesota now have the best chance in the region of picking up 4+ inches of snow. 

There’s a 56% chance of Wabasha picking up that much snow and a 53% chance of at least four inches of snow in Winona. The Twin Cities has a 50% chance of picking up four or more inches of snow. 

Wednesday’s forecast is calling for snowfall amounts ranging from 2-4 inches in Rochester. 3-5 inches of snow are possible in the Twin Cities Thursday night. 

The newest forecast indicates communities in central Wisconsin could get the most snow. That region of the state has at least a 70% chance of getting at least four inches of snow Thursday night. 

Forecasters say the storm track could still change before Thursday night and that there is still uncertainty of where the heaviest snowfall will occur.
