One of the top bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s is coming to the Mount Rushmore State this summer to headline at the South Dakota State Fair.

Grammy-nominated Goo Goo Dolls will appear on the Grandstand stage, Friday, August 30.

The band got its start in Buffalo, New York in 1986, when guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik, bassist/vocalist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska started playing together. Takac and Tutuska had been schoolmates and met Rzeznik while he was playing in the band The Beaumonts, with Takac's cousin.

Goo Goo Dolls' first two albums (1987's Goo Goo Dolls and 1989's Jed) with Takac on lead vocals, had little success, but when Rzeznik took over as singer for the band's third album, Hold Me Up (1990), things began to change.

Less than five years later, Goo Goo Dolls had their first Top 40 album, 1990's A Boy Named Goo, and a Top 5 single ' Name'.

From 1995 to 2006, there were seven more Top 40 singles, including two more Top Ten singles (1998's 'Iris' and 'Slide'), and three more Top 40 albums. including a pair of Top Ten's (2002's Gutterflower and 2006's Let Love In).

Goo Goo Dolls have been nominated for three Grammys and won four Billboard Music Awards over the years, selling 15 million albums along the way.

Their most recent album, Chaos in Bloom, came out in 2022, with Rzeznik and Takac still leading the way.
