Aldi Says Goodbye to Plastic Bags

The Aldi grocery chain will remove plastic shopping bags from all of it's 2,300-plus stores leaving shoppers will 2 options: bring a reusable bag or buy one at checkout.

The move stems from environmental concerns citing the removal of all plastic bags from their stores will eliminate nearly 9 million pounds of plastic from circulation yearly - about 20 Lady Liberty Statues.

“As one of America’s fastest-growing retailers, we take our responsibility to lead the industry in sustainability seriously, so our customers don’t have to choose between shopping responsibly and saving money.” ~ Aldi’s CEO, Jason Hart.

The move will make Aldi the first major retailer in the U.S. to totally eliminate plastic bags. Their goal was to completely be free of plastic bags by the end of 2023.

Americans throw away 100 million plastic bags every year, making them a major contributor to environmental damage.

"Eliminating plastic shopping bags from our stores and transitioning to environmentally friendly refrigerant systems not only help us protect the environment, but they also help reduce costs, which we then pass on to our customers." ~ Aldi’s CEO, Jason Hart.

States such as California, Hawaii, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Oregon, New Jersey, and Vermont have all enacted laws to eliminate plastic bags from retailers.
