I don't know about you, but when I was 9 years old, I was shy and awkward. However, a young Sioux Falls resident is anything but shy. She's brave, bold, and many are calling her a hero.

9-year-old Avery Antonen is being recognized by the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue with the "Citizen Hero Award" for her heroic efforts at a neighborhood pool.

Our news partners at Dakota News Now are reporting Avery Antonen was at an apartment pool over the summer when she noticed a little boy drowning. Without hesitation, Avery pulled the boy out of the water.

“This little 2-year-old named Austin passed that wall and started having a seizure underwater. And so I said, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s under,’ and lifted him up by his armpits as high as I could."

Avery's aunt, Maggie Olson, was on the scene with Avery and called 911 when Avery called for help. She tells Dakota News Now that Avery was scared, but remained calm throughout the surreal situation.

On Friday, the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue honored Avery with the "Citizen Hero Award." They shared the heart-warming moment on their Facebook page.

At the ceremony, members of the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue commended Avery on her fearless spirit at such a young age, including firefighter Troy Mead.

“What stands out for Avery, she was a very great example of bravery and courage, especially at her age. It’s very hard to maintain your composure when something like this happens. It’s very stressful, and you don’t see it every day."

Avery's story is a great lesson for all of us to learn in the Sioux Falls community. Always be ready to help someone in need, no matter the challenge. Way to go, Avery!
