Minnesota Couple Stuck With 30,000 Pennies-Bank Rejects Them

There's a classic phrase that's useful to remember when it comes to saving money: "A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned." Well...one Minnesota couple took this quote literally.

John Becker and his wife from Coon Rapids, Minnesota have spent the last ten years saving pennies. This five-gallon jar is filled with thousands of pennies. 30,000 to be exact. They truly have the ultimate spare change jar!

Our news partners at Dakota News Now and WCCO are reporting John and his wife tried to turn in the jar of coins to their local bank. They're estimating this jar has about $300 worth of pennies in it. There's just one problem...the bank is refusing to take the jar of pennies from the Beckers.

The Beckers explained that they do their backing at Border Bank near Coon Rapids. So why did the band turn down the jar of pennies from the Becker family? According to the branch president at Border Bank, it's simply too heavy! Here's the statement the branch president sent to WCCO:

“It would be too heavy to lift, and the coins would get jammed in the neck of the container. If the customer can move the coins to smaller buckets without a neck, we’d be happy to process."

Since the bank will not take the jar of pennies, the Beckers are figuring out other options. In the meantime, John says they will continue to collect pennies. John explains his wife enjoys finding pennies on the ground. However, his wife is willing to give someone else her jar of pennies for a price!
