Don’t Expect Mail In Minnesota, Iowa, & South Dakota on Thursday
If anyone in Minnesota, Iowa, or South Dakota looks forward to getting mail daily like myself, expect to find an empty mailbox this coming Thursday.
All U.S. Postal Services across the country will be closed for the day on Thursday, January 9th. This includes all mail services in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota.
You're probably thinking that the first national holiday is approaching. However, instead of celebrating a group of people, the nation will celebrate one of the most pivotal presidents of our time.
January 9th will be a day dedicated to the life of the 39th President of the United States James Earl Carter Jr...Mr. Jimmy Carter.
Born in 1924, Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday, December 29th, 2024 at his home in Georgia at the wonderful age of 100.
Since then the nation and world have remembered President Carter for his achievements in office, but more importantly his humanitarian efforts after having the longest post-presidency career.
So what do postal services in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota have to do with President Jimmy Carter's death?
Call it a tradition, but every time a US President passes away postal services and other government operations are suspended. Thursday, January 9th, 2025 will be known as a "National Day of Mourning" for the 39th President.
The last time the nation celebrated a "National Day of Mourning" for a president was in 2018 when the 41st President George H.W. Bush passed away. Further details about the suspension of U.S. Postal services and other government entities can be found here.
President Jimmy Carter's funeral will be televised on January 9th as early as 8 AM Eastern Time.
