How do you like your eggs? I like em', I just don't like the price of them right now!

If you haven't been inside a grocery store lately, there's an egg shortage going on, not just here in the Sioux Empire, but throughout the entire U.S.

What's the reason? Bird flu. Yep, the avian flu, is causing eggs to be extremely scarce on store shelves, and when you can find eggs there are fewer choices.

According to Dakota News Now, don't look for the situation to improve any time soon.

Dakota News Now reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture says over 17 million egg-laying hens died during the last two months of 2024 as a result of the avian flu.

Experts say it will take months to replace those flocks. Conversely, fewer egg-laying hens mean fewer eggs, which means, you guessed it, higher egg prices.

Right now in the Sioux Falls area, a dozen eggs is running nearly $5.00 a carton. And thanks to the current egg shortage,  there's a very good chance those egg prices could be going even higher in the future.

Dakota News Now reports the average price of a dozen eggs of any kind at the end of December was around $4.33. That price was up nearly 25% from the beginning of November.

The on-going egg shortage will undoubtedly be felt in every facet of the food industry. Meaning the next time you go for Sunday breakfast at your favorite restaurant, there's a fairly good chance the meal you like to order containing a side of eggs will cost even more. Swell, right?

It looks like now would be a good time to learn how to love oatmeal, at least until the bird flu is out of the picture.
