May is Huntington's Disease Awareness Month.

According to the Huntington's Disease Society of America website, this disease is a "fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities usually during their prime working years and has no cure."  Anyone between the ages of 30 to 50 years-old can experience symptoms.

South Dakota's Chapter for the Huntington's Disease Society of America's (H.D.S.A.) Annual "Team Hope" Walk/Run will be a little different this May. Amid concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, "Team Hope" Walk/Run scheduled for May 23rd will be virtual.

According to a recent press release, registration is free and on your own terms.  "A virtual walk is a real walk, but on your terms: You get to choose your own course, you can walk in your driveway, neighborhood, in your house, and even on a treadmill. All proceeds support HDSA’s mission to improve the lives of people affected by HD and their families," says South Dakota H.D.S.A.

If the ill effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to dissipate, and it is once again safe for individuals to gather together at public events, then the South Dakota Chapter for H.D.S.A. hopes to see supporters for its "Team Hope Walk" on September 19th at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls.
