What’s the Status of Items in the Delbridge Museum of Natural History?
The city of Sioux Falls and the Great Plains Zoo are discussing what to do with all the pieces found in the Delbridge Museum of Natural History.
The museum has been closed for over a year, and the city and zoo are discussing the best path forward to preserve the collection. The main objective is to maintain the educational and research value of the collection.
Great Plains Zoo CEO Becky Dewitz told Dakota News Now, “It’s been wonderful to have them in the city of Sioux Falls for a cumulative of 80 years. So, if there’s a possibility that there’s more educational life and experience that we can offer, I think it’s a great opportunity."
According to Dakota News Now, on September 20th non-profit and government agencies will be able to start applying to have pieces from the collection donated to them by the city.
State and federal laws dictate that only select agencies are eligible to receive these items.
There are those here in the Sioux Empire who are disappointed to see the zoo move on from these items, but the ultimate decision comes down to funding.
Dewitz told Dakota News Now, “Really, it comes down to a business plan and making sure it’s the right investment and something that we can afford to continue to house at that zoo. When I put it in that context people understand there’s a limitation of money and a limitation of funding for this. We just want to make sure that we make the right decision and have the affordance that we need to take care of these animals if they stay at the zoo.”
December 12th is the deadline for all the eligible agencies to apply.
Dakota News Now said they plan to post a link to all the agencies applying once they go live.
