Many people are going through a season of financial hardship at the moment. Those tough economic times can get especially difficult in and around the holiday season, as people and families struggle to find enough money to cover the increased cost of food and energy during the cold weather months, along with the challenge of trying to scrape together extra money to use for holiday spending and gift giving.

Often lost in all of these struggles are family pets. In many cases, our furry friends are forced to take a backseat when it comes to the list of financial priorities.

To help pet families who are currently experiencing a season of financial hardship, the Sioux Falls Humane Society is again putting on its "Elves Fill Our Shelves” campaign.

As Dakota News Now reports, this campaign is designed to help ease the burden of providing for your pets during tough financial times during the holiday season.

The goal of the campaign is to restock the shelves of the SFAHS Community Pet Food Bank.

Dana Konzem, Community Outreach Director at SFAHS told Dakota News Now, “We don’t want animals to end up homeless or hungry. If SFAHS can help keep pets in homes by supplying a little food now and then to support struggling owners, we will.”

How can you help?

It's simple, by becoming an SFAHS elf.

Elves are asked to donate pet food and supplies to the Sioux Falls Humane Society that in turn will be distributed to struggling pet families throughout the Sioux Empire.

According to Dakota News Now, donations can be dropped off at the Humane Society at 3720 East Benson Road during business hours.

The campaign runs through (December 31).  All brands of pet food are accepted, and open bags are accepted as long as they are in their original packaging.
